Visual Narratives: Shop Windows as Italian Design Storytelling

January 18–29, 2027

Few design objects sit at as many crossroads as the shop window. Transparent yet not immediately accessible, it stages a threshold between exterior and interior, city and architecture, public life and commerce — a form of urban diorama: a temporary micro-environment dense with meaning, atmosphere, and message.

What was once purely a commercial tool has become something far richer: a vehicle for cultural communication, a manifesto, a site of experimentation, even a medium for social and political statements. This hybrid nature is exactly what makes the shop window such a distinctive design laboratory — one that draws together art, architecture, fashion, design, theatre, sociology, UX, and visual culture in a single, contained format.

This Winter School is built around that uniqueness: a rare opportunity to study a transdisciplinary design object at a scale small enough to prototype quickly, yet complex enough to demand real critical and narrative thinking. Through creative exercises, lectures on history and design, and case studies drawn from Italian and international culture, students test techniques, narratives, and sensory experiences directly in the street-facing laboratory of the shop window itself.

Participants leave having rediscovered the shop window as a hybrid diorama — a narrative and spatial threshold for creativity, critical thinking, and experimentation — and with a sharper sense of its evolving role in design practice and contemporary visual culture.
